About Tacoma Narrows Bridge
Galloping Gertie collapsed in 1940 due to aeroelastic flutter just 4 months after opening. The replacement bridge incorporated deeper stiffening trusses and hydraulic dampers. The collapse footage is still shown in engineering classes worldwide. Wind tunnel testing became mandatory for all long-span bridges after this disaster.
